Winter Weather

Dear Parents

Early wintry conditions mean that I need to remind you of the course of action should coming to and from school become difficult. The Education Department will endeavour to keep schools open provided it is safe and the school is sufficiently staffed. Most of our staff live within walking distance so we would hope to continue as normal, with slight alterations to classes and timetables and possibly a delayed start. School buses may be operational depending on the severity of the road conditions. If the temperature drops below freezing point, children must take extra care in icy conditions.  If we have snow, or the pavements are icy, you must decide whether it is safe to send/bring your child (ren) to school.  Radio Guernsey, Island FM and the Guernsey Police will help inform you of the road conditions and whether the schools are open, usually this is reported after 7.00 am. It is possible that schools in the lower parishes may be open while those in the higher parishes could be closed.

If the weather deteriorates during the course of the day, once again, radio bulletins will help provide information. You would have the option of collecting your child (ren) early, or as soon as possible. The school would not close immediately. Our greatest difficulty would be ensuring that the children who normally use the bus at the end of the day get home safely, if the buses cease to run. It may necessitate us contacting parents of those children at home or work to decide on the best option.

In spite of recent wintry conditions, some children are still coming to school without a coat.  Although the days often brighten up, the temperature can be very low.  On days like these the children enjoy the fresh air but soon get cold, which often leads to illness.  If they have a coat in school (named, please) then at least the children have the option of choosing whether to wear it or not, or they can put it on if their teacher thinks they should.

Yours sincerely
